About Us

Koala-Kidz was established in 1987, has always provided high quality care for the under fives. Our nursery is open from 7.30am until 5:30pm every working day of the year. We offer free (funded) pre-school places.

We provide a progressive balance between enjoyment, education and support to our young charges and, in conjunction with you, aim to successfully aid their development.

Our approach is strongly guided and influenced by three main policies: ‘fresh air’ , ‘good food’ and ‘self-discipline’. Years of experience have led us to the conclusion that these three factors are the recipe for a healthy, happy and socially aware child. So, as thus , they form the basis of our philosophy.

Every child deserves the best possible start in life and support to fulfil their potential. When parents choose Koala-Kidz, they know that we will keep their children safe and help them to thrive.

Our aim is to help young children achieve the five Every Child Matters outcomes of staying safe, being healthy, enjoying and achieving, making a positive contribution, and achieving economic well-being.

More Than Just A Playgroup

You want the best possible start for your child – so do we!

You want your son or daughter’s abilities developed in a vibrant, warm, child-centred environment – so do we! You want your youngster to come home loving school, enthusiastic about all the activities that take place every day, where a desire for learning is fostered which is the foundation for future success – so do we!

Your child’s mind will be fed and watered. They will be encouraged to develop an awareness of phonics and will be introduced to early stage key vocabulary in order to build early reading success. If he or she is ready they will be encouraged to begin simple reading. Your child will tackle letter and word formation, and will start to write confidently, initially just his or her name, but more over time.

Your child will develop mathematical skills and understanding in a practical and informal way, thus laying down the stepping stones to later achievement. Knowledge and understanding of the world will be stimulated at school by growing plants in the garden, nature walks, and an exciting pattern of visitors – such as the snakes and reptiles recently.

Your child’s imagination will be stretched through creativity and construction. Through drama. Concerts, painting, modelling, dressing up, movement, games, singing and music children will explore their inner selves, the world around them, and their reactions to it.

Healthy Eating

Our aim is to provide children with a wide variety of food which they enjoy, and gives them at least 3 of their daily portions of fruit and vegetables.

During the morning we will offer the ‘early birds’ with breakfast, if parents want us to, as well as a mid morning snack which includes a drink of milk or squash, fruit, biscuits or toast.

We also provide main meals of the day which are free from artificial preservatives, colourings or hydrogenated fats. The main meal is cooked by our own staff and so we know exactly what is added.

Menus are planned in advance and food offered is wholesome and balanced. The meals cater for vegetarian children and meat eaters, and we can also cater for children with nut or dairy allergies. If you require a look at the menu please ask.

Children will then be provided with a further snack during late afternoon, which includes a drink of squash and sandwiches or soup, beans on toast, crumpets, fruit and yoghurt.

All snacks and meals are included in the fees. If you have a particular dietary requirement for your child, we will do our best to plan our menu accordingly, otherwise, you can provide your own food.

The Early Years Foundation Stage

The EYFS principles which guide the work of all practitioners are grouped into four distinct but complementary themes.

They provide a context for the requirements and describe how practitioners should support the development, learning and care of young children.

The themes are each broken down into four commitments describing how the principles can be put into practice.

> A Unique Child recognises that every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured. The commitments are focused around development; inclusion; safety; and health and well-being.

> Positive Relationships describes how children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and/or a key person. The commitments are focused around respect; partnership with parents; supporting learning; and the role of the key person.

> Enabling Environments explains that the environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children’s development and learning.

> Learning and Development recognises that children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates, and that all areas of learning and development are equally important and inter-connected.

Our Key Worker System

At Koala-Kidz we have a key worker system. This means that a member of staff will be dedicated to your child. Your child's key worker will be the person who works with you to make sure that what we provide is right for your child's particular needs and interests. When your child first starts, she/he will help your child to settle and throughout your child's time at the nursery.

The key worker will encourage, support and develop your child’s skills and ensure that records of development are kept and individual needs are met for you and your child. Every child will receive a Birth to Five booklet / folder that details their progress and achievements, and focuses on your child’s early years both at Nursery and at home.

Parents are encouraged to take away the folder so that they can actively participate in recording their child’s progress. Parents can approach their key worker at any time to discuss any issues regarding their child. There are regular evenings where there is an opportunity to spend a longer time to chat.

Involving the Family

As a parent you want to know what your child is doing and how well he or she is doing. We want you to know because then we can work in partnership together. We adopt an open door approach and are always available to listen to you. You will be invited to regular parents’ meetings to find out what is happening and to meet the staff. You will have regular newsletters, you will be told what activities your child is doing for the week, and even the day.

Once your place is booked, but before your child starts the nursery, we will offer you and your child the opportunity to attend ‘settling in sessions’. This is essential to ensure your child is comfortable in being left with us, and will enable us to build an important relationship with you.

Good communication with you is vitally important. We will ensure you are given every opportunity to talk to your key worker and other Nursery staff.

Parent’s evenings are held regularly to discuss your child’s progress, needs and development. Notice boards are located around the Nursery, containing specific information for each Base Room and activities or events taking place.
